Deputy Mayor Comments On AMM Conference In Steinbach

Mayor George Fontaine, Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas Funk and councillor Mike Slipp recently attended the AMM Conference in Steinbach which brought together over 30 municipalities from across the province.

Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas Funk was on the CFAR City Beat show last week and  mentioned that the recent  wildfires were a big part of the discussion. " The Wildfires were a huge conversation,  so Mayor Fontaine and myself got up and made a small presentation. We talked about evacuating, our aspect, the barriers, what worked and what didn't. Thompson's Kathy Valentino got up and spoke about preparing, asset protection and the other communities got involved and talked about what do you do with evacuees once they come to your community?"

Funk says that a round table is planned for the future with the other communities that were affected and what worked and didn’t work. You can listen to last week’s complete show on the CFAR sound cloud page at flinflononline.com.

Denare Beach Cleanup Is Going Well

The community cleanup continues in Denare Beach as the Village tries to recover from a devastating wildfire that ravaged the area back in early June.

Werbicki Trucking along with Aercom and the Village are working very hard on the cleanup with the hope to get residents homes and business’s rebuilt as soon as possible. Kari  Lentowics is part of the management team and says they are making a lot of progress.  " Well everything is going very well and we have had most of the people that had to hand in wavers have done so. We have done most of the manual debris removal. We are working on some of the hand picking and there are some partial lots that need to be done. It is pretty impressive how far these guys have gotten in such a short amount of time, 6 weeks and we are almost done the cleanup which is pretty impressive."

Dave McPherson is also part of the management team and has been involved with the cleanup since the beginning and shares his thoughts on an overwhelming experience. " Well it has been a pretty heartfelt experience, my son lost three buildings and actually one of the homes was my wife's childhood home. When I got asked to join the team by Joey Werbicki, to help with the cleanup, I stepped up to the plate and basically used my leadership skills. I had the backup from Joey and Mike and then we brought along Kari  and the team worked out perfectly for us for this cleanup."

12 % of properties have been completed with another 70 % that have had debris removal and are ready for the next stage. On the Amiskosakahkikan side,  PBCN with strong leadership from Clay Sewap , say they expect to have all their properties replaced by the end of February.

It Was A Great Summer In Cranberry

Cranberry wrapped up another summer of Artisan Markets this past weekend at the Cranberry Heritage Museum.

Despite having to cancel two markets due to the wildfires, the event was very successful with lots of vendors and people coming together from all over.

Barb Bragg has the details. " We still had in the last two markets in August and September almost two thousand people come to Cranberry. That is absolutely amazing and remember we only have around 600 people who live in the community. In terms of vendors the numbers keep going up which is great,  but we are going to have to  start finding more space because if everyone  would of showed up for the first market we would of had 67. That would push our limits in terms of where we are right now and we will see what kind of opportunities that brings for us."

Barb  went on to mention that they have lots of other events coming up to promote Cranberry,  including their Trails Committee who is in the midst of putting up signage for all their trails. They will also be revamping their museum and look forward to their Christmas Market on November the 22nd and have some funding to upgrade their beach.
