FF Recycling Centre Recognizes Staff Members And Volunteers

The Flin Flon Recycling Centre held their AGM and Year End Presentation last week at Johnny’s Social Club.

Among the highlights was the Recycling Centre recognizing some board members and volunteers with community awards.  Administrator Deb Odegaard  tells us who got recognized this year.

" During the first part of the meeting we honored the Ross Lake Reclamation group as a community organization with environmental goals . We honored our staff member Naomi Rempel who served for six years and Bob Putko a board member who has been serving for six years."

Other highlights from the meeting included the Recycling Centre coming short of their goal in tonnage  and are at about 2016 levels in terms of tonnage. They feel this reason is because the town has shrunk and people aren’t using as much paper as they used to. There was a good turn out with a lot of residents attending the meeting which was encouraging.

They did lose two members on their board,  but one of the positions has been filled by a member of the Ross Lake Reclamation Group. If you are interested in filling the other board spot you can call Deb at the Recycling Centre at 204-687-6169.

Wildfire Information Session Held Last Week

The City of Flin Flon hosted a wildfire information session last week as we move towards wildfire season once again this summer.

Members of Flin Flon City Council were joined by members of the Flin Flon Fire department including Fire Chief Jason Kuras, members of the Manitoba Wildfire Service, Manitoba EMO and Flin Flon Emergency members.

There were a variety of issues discussed including how wildfires are fought, how people can protect their properties, and why certain decisions were made last year including the decision to have residents evacuate.

Members from Firesafe Canada talked about how to keep brush, etc. away from your home, because of flying hot embers in a wildfire fire usually lead to how your home can catch on fire.

The City Of Flin Flon is currently working with professionals from a mitigation plan to clear deadwood near the community. This is a three to five year project that involves working with all levels of government.

The City reminds residents to make sure that they have filled out their emergency pre registration form on the City Of Flin Flon website or by picking up a form from  City Hall.

There Are New Owners At The Gas Bar

The Flin Flon Gas Bar is an institution in our community and now has new owners and operators.

Former employees Damian and Mel Dominey are the new owners and are leasing the business and property from Suncor. Both owners worked for Dennis Bouteiller in the 90’s and have returned to the business they worked at in high school.

Damian Dominey explains why they wanted to take the business over from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and some of the hurdles they have encountered so far. " There is such a history at that location and they have employed a lot of kids over the years. We didn't want to see the place shut down because that is how it was looking like. It has been a challenge,  not being a business owner you have so many hoops you have to jump through with the government with selling  tobacco and lottery. The public has been great as we continue to settle in and get set up."

The Dominey’s took over the business as of April the 1st and employ 8 people with the hours 6am to 11pm,7 days a week.

Art Unexpected

A project starting from British Columbia is working on bringing a specific form of rebuilding from last summer’s wildfires. Known as “Art Unexpected” Local Liaison Crystal Kolt lets us know more

“There’s former Flin Flonner’s, who are now living on the West coast, that got together and they thought wouldn’t it be lovely to be able to uplift people’s spirits, from their homes that were completely destroyed and families that lost everything, to be able to give them a work of art. And, what they started to do was ask around to see who would donate a work of art, and so this would be collected and would be given freely to people in our communities who would like to receive artwork.”

Former Flin Flonner’s who began Art Unexpected include Miles and Elaine Donaldson, Brenda Russell, and Wayne Fraser.  The goal is to provide a piece of art to each family that suffered loss of residence. The artwork will be distributed during Culture Days this fall at an event at the Flin Flon Community Hall. “So, I’m going to say that right now the website is still coming up, so, go to Facebook if you wanna see some things. We’re working on the whole map of the agenda. The Bombers are having a Bombers 100 Celebration August long, but they’re also going to be a part of July long the Trout Festival Weekend, which has becoming Flin Flon ’27. It’ll include the Flin Flon ’27 Fish Fry. It’s gonna include a folkarama type thing. Before that weekend starts there will probably be some Bomber Town. We’re actually trying to get, we’re working on, a train type themed thing. So much is in the works.”

A few of the other events that have been confirmed include a Regatta and Fire Works, Parade and Canada Day events for both Creighton and Denare Beach.

The Hapnot Theatre Presents...

The Central Canada Film Group will be holding a free movie presentation tomorrow night. A science fiction block buster from over forty years ago will be shown. The group’s Colin Davis shares the details.

“Well Spring is certainly trying to put its grip on Winter, but Winter seems to still be putting up a struggle, and what better way to get away from the last of the snow than by coming to the Hapnot Theatre this Friday for a viewing of the classic Blade Runner.

Now, if you’ve never seen Blade Runner, it would be well worth your time to come check it out. It was a hit back in 1982 and it’s still fascinating to see if for no other reason than they did it all without CGI.

If you were a kid in 1982, you probably didn’t see Blade Runner cause you were too busy going to see E.T. But if you were a young adult, you probably did go see Blade Runner but you saw it through eyes that now view everything differently. So, why don’t you come see it again this Friday and you’ll pick up on so much more you missed the first time guaranteed.

And remember, as always, admission is free. Hope to see you there.”

The movie starts at 7:30 at the Hapnot Theatre, but short films will be shown at 7pm. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase, but the movie itself will have no cost to enter.

Ladies Auxiliary Annual Vimy Tea

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch numbers 73 Ladies Auxiliary are preparing for one of their longest running events this weekend. The Vimy Tea commemorates the World War I battle of Vimy Ridge where for the first time, the four divisions of the Canadian military corps fought as a single unit, achieving a victory where British and French forces had previously failed. Tea convener Claudette Toffan tells us that it not only honours an important Canadian milestone but also helps out the community.

“By having this Tea we raise money for bursaries that are awarded to graduating students who are furthering their education in any field. We give out bursaries to Hapnot, Many Faces, and in Creighton. Our Legion Ladies have been doing this since 1977, and each year we put up a star with the names of the bursary winners to be seen by all who attend the Tea.”

It includes sandwiches, a bake table, loonie parade, cake walk, sheet cake plus the money raffle ,the scratch ticket raffle and of course tea. The 48th Annual Vimy Tea takes place this Saturday at the legion auditorium from one to four. Admission is $7.

New Regional Health Committee

A new Regional Health Committee has been created for residents of Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach to be able to deal with various health concerns and work together.

This committee will work directly with the NRHA by making sure your concerns and needs are being met. Chair person Dan Hlady says this committee has long been over due.

“I think it came together just from the voice of residents in the area just with some frustrations that they felt you know with the health care system. And I think the joint committee of Denare Beach, Flin Flon, Creighton, PBCN included. You know, we wanted to hear from the general public what their concerns are. Because not just one person but if that problem happens with others we might not hear it and we’re trying to look out for the best interest of everyone in our communities.”

This committee will meet at least once a month to deal with any concerns. If you have any concerns, questions or comments you can submit them in writing by emailing thomson.karen@icloud.com with your name and contact information.
