More of Us Are Recycling.

 Grace and Graham CraigLaVerne Hinzman

                                             with Deb Odegaard

The Flin Flon Environment Council held their annual meeting last night.  Recycling Centre Administrator Deb Odegaard reported they recycled 442 tonnes last year down 18 tonnes from the previous year but co-mingled materials were up 11 thousand tonnes.  She says this is encouraging as this material reflects residential recycling which means more people are recycling at home.

Odegaard added the red bag curbside service in Flin Flon continues to cover its costs, business pickup continues to be a major part of their operation, Creighton curbside pick up has greatly reduced garbage truck loads, Denare Beach is supporting the recycle program and the year round hazardous waste drop off depot at the Flin Flon landfill has been approved.

The Recycling Centre Community Champion Award was presented to Graham Craig, the Employee service award to Earl Crouse and the Board Member Award to LaVerne Hinzman for their volunteer work and support of the Centre.

The Recycling Program will celebrate 25 years in November.

Cianflone said they have also been working with young people through their BizKids workshops, Frontier Collegiate’s Egg Lake Project and planning Biz Camps this summer in Flin Flon and Snow Lake, an Indigenous youth biz workshop and are looking at expanding programs for all ages through the school divisions.

Flin Flons MLA is Concerned About Funding for Arts and Culture.

MLA Tom Lindsey told the Legislature the north is a flourishing arts and culture hub with local museums being a beacon of northern Manitoba’s rich history.  He used as an example the Cranberry Portage Heritage Museum developed by the community and nearly a decade in the making.  He says the museum welcomes visitors from across the country.  He says cuts to arts and culture funding hits small communities especially hard.  Lindsey explains we need to remember that for the people of Cranberry Portage, a community of 771 residents, their museum is so much more than a place that holds artifacts.  He says it’s a place that holds the collective memories of families who have lived in the community for generations, it’s a place that preserves the history of Manitoba’s north and finally it’s a place that teaches young people about their heritage and culture.

Lindsey adds he’s concerned about cuts to arts and culture funding noting investing in culture means investing in the people of Manitoba and this is true for all the small communities throughout the north.

A Home Was Destroyed by Fire Early Yesterday Morning.

At approximately 2:35 yesterday morning the Flin Flon Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 84 Callinan Street.  Fire Chief Chad Cooper reports upon arrival fire crews found heavy smoke visible from the rear of the building.  They deployed fire attack hoses to the rear of the building to attack the fire and search for any occupants.  Due to a partially collapsed floor and fire in the basement they were transitioned into a defensive fire attack from outside the building.

Cooper says it was an extremely difficult and stubborn fire to fight.  He says the fire was concealed within void spaces and several additions to the home over the years which made it very difficult to find the seat of the fire.

All occupants escaped the fire and there were no injuries reported.  Cooper says the home is a complete lloss and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

The City of Flin Flons financial plan for the year was presented at a public meeting last night.

The total budget is just under 13.4 million dollars down from 13.5 million actually spent last year.  The special services levy will increase by 3 percent to $635.04 but Treasurer Glenna Daschuk says with the decrease of .57 mills in the general municipal mill rate a house assessed at 100 thousand dollars will not see an increase or decrease in taxes.  If you include the school levy which is collected by the city for the School Division the mill rate is set at 44.99 for residential property an increase over last year of 1.37 percent and 55.49 for commercial an increase of 1.11 percent. Hudbay’s grant in lieu of taxes is just over 6.3 million dollars with 1.51 million going to the school division. With our drop in population in the last census per capita grants from the province will be reduced.

Some improvements around the community budgeted for include Community Hall washrooms, Whitney Forum lighting, Centoba Park and Tourist Bureau site upgrades, Aqua Center structural study, Willowvale pool assessment, accessibility upgrades required by provincial legislation and landfill expansion.

The meeting is being held Thursday night from 7 to 9 in the McIsaac School music room.

A Local Office Will Continue to be Open.

The future of the Flin Flon Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation hung in the balance awaiting the Manitoba budget last week.  Their Executive Director Laurence Gillespie says they have received some good news from the budget.  He says it shows the funding for the Neighborhoods Alive program which is the provincial government program that funds the operation of their office has not been reduced so it would seem that it’s likely that their office will be allowed to continue to operate for the coming year.  He adds what they don’t know is whether they will be able to administer the two programs they traditionally run which are the small grants and the fix up program as the funding situation for those is not clear at this point.

Gillespie says he will let us know when funding for their programs is confirmed.  You can contact Laurence’s office at 204-687-6972 for more information.

Our MLA Says the Manitoba Budget Ignores the Needs of Northern Families.

Flin Flon MLA Tom Lindsey says families and communities in the north were hit hard by the latest budget from the Pallister government. He says at a time when the north needs investments in health care, education and jobs the government has turned its back on families adding the north needs jobs and training strategies that will ensure long term economic growth and provide families with hope for a brighter future for their children

He listed examples by noting the cutting of investments in roads and infrastructure including closing the Grace Lake airport near The Pas at a time when the government is also cutting funding for the Northern Patient Transportation Program, making no new investments in mining or resource industries in the north at a time when workers are facing job insecurity, cutting funding for arts programs, libraries and cultural programs for northern communities and leaving municipalities in limbo by refusing to tell them what funding would be available for local roads and bridges.  He adds the government has still not provided any details on their plan for the duty to consult with Indigenous communities a year into their mandate.

The Chair of the Board of Trustees of Flin Flon School Division Murray Skeavington has issued a release correcting misinformation that was given during Tuesdays Board Meeting.  It was stated that no contract had been signed regarding the joint purchase of Saint Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.  The release states the Chair misunderstood the process and misspoke.  Possession date was April 3rd.  The final land title document was given to the School Division lawyers on April 12th.  The Division was informed on the 12th that in cases of a purchase without a mortgage there are no contracts requiring signatures on closing.

The Flin Flon School Board Heard About Student Travel Tuesday Night.

The Plan for a Northern Center Project Has Taken a Major Step Forward.

The North Central Canada Center for the Arts and Environment committee presented a feasibility study on their project last night. Their goal is to build a center in the Flin Flon area that will support and enrich our communities. The study recommends a building containing a theatre, visual arts spaces and a gallery, a common room and a selection of multipurpose rooms for events in addition to the arts with a cost estimated at 38.7 million dollars. Consultant Rick Schick says they have provided the committee with a guide they can use as they move forward.  He says as those things change the study is a guide so that you come back and you can start to manipulate some of the tables and some of the information that’s in there to provide a new look and a new budget as the project grows.

Schick says the committee can now determine funding, whether or not it’s a project they can proceed with and how many groups would be interested in using the Center and contributing to it.  He adds somebody has to say it’s something we need to do and find a way to make it happen.  The complete study can be found on their website www.ncccae.ca.

The Power of Ideas Tour is Coming to Cranberry Portage.

Frontier Collegiate in Cranberry Portage is one of sixty locations in Canada to host the Power of Ideas tour.  The Collegiate’s Bill Taylor says they are the only high school in Manitoba hosting the tour.  He says there are three parts in the tour that runs Tuesday and Wednesday next week presenting high end information on Canada’s innovation future, present and past. He explains the first part is the exhibition that’s put on by the Perimeter Institute and it will be a walk through exhibition where students and the general public can walk through the gym and observe various innovations in science.  The second part is talks that students and the general public can attend and they are held in the gym and there will be four talks during the day and they will also be on topics related to innovations in science.

Taylor says the third part is Maker workshops including lasers, 3-D printers and walk through stations presented by Actua, one of Canada’s highest stem science outreach organizations whose role is to inspire future innovation.

A Building Purchase Was Questioned Last Night.

Greg East and Bruce Reed questioned the Flin Flon School Board on the purchase of St. Mary’s Church across from Ruth Betts School.  They noted the space available in our schools due to the reduction in the number of students over the years and questioned the cost of the building and renovations needed to an old building to bring it up to education building standards, staff requirements and the burden placed on taxpayers.

In her report Superintendent Constance McLeese mentioned securing the building with little cash outlay due to a partnership with the Food Bank and the learning opportunities it can offer and opportunities for increasing community and parent engagement in the education system.  Looking at programming she noted they are focusing on student engagement for vocational education support and engagement for at risk students and for Aboriginal students as well as enhanced learning opportunities for all students adding the space is ready to be used.

In response to a question from East Board Chair Murray Skeavington said an agreement to purchase has not yet been signed and the Board will answer their questions on the need for the building, renovations required and costs at their next meeting.

Watch Out For Pole Fires.

Manitoba Hydro reminds you this is the time of year for pole fires.  They report warm spring weather brings humidity and when humidity mixes with built up winter grime on power line insulators, electrical short circuits can occur on wooden poles.  In the humidity from dense fog or very light rain or snow the dirt mixes with moisture on the insulators and can create a pathway for electricity to travel from the power line to the wood pole and this short circuit causes a fire. If fire burns through the pole the power lines can drop and present a public safety hazard.  They advise if you see a pole fire or a downed line call Manitoba Hydro at 1-888-MBHYDRO so they can deploy a crew to assess the damage and restore power to affected areas.

There are Big Dollars to be Caught This Weekend.

The Flin Flon Rotary Club is holding their third annual Flinty Ice Fishing Derby Sunday.  Rotarian Glen Smith says the ice is the thickest they’ve seen in fifteen years.  He measured it a few days ago at 40 to 44 inches thick so that’s great for the anglers but a little hard for drilling holes because its thick ice to drill through but the ice is great.  He adds there has been water on the ice but the water is now draining and they’re pretty sure that by Sunday it’ll be high ice and the water will have drained off and it could be perfect conditions for fishing.

The derby offers 25 thousand for first place.  Smith says they have two new prizes with a hidden length at 25 hundred and the smallest fish at 500 dollars. He says they will have tickets available Sunday for walk-ins with fishing running from 11 to 2 at Sally’s Beach at Bakers Narrows.  The event is part of a great ice fishing weekend as it follows the Bill Bannock Derby held in The Pas Saturday.

Increased Production at Lalor Mine is in an Updated Mine Plan.

Hudbay has announced an optimized mine plan for Lalor Mine near Snow Lake as well as a feasibility study for its Rosemont project in Arizona.

The updated Lalor Mine plan incorporates an increase in the throughput rate at the Stall concentrator and in planned zinc production.  Feasibility work is ongoing for the Lalor gold zone and copper gold zone targeting an additional 15 hundred tonnes per day through the New Britannia mill.

President Alan Hair says these enhancements offer low cost, near term zinc production growth with potential future gold production upside and positions their Manitoba business unit to be a strong contributor to Hudbay’s results for many years to come.  He adds the Rosemont project is expected to be one of the first new copper mines to be built when copper prices improve and once approved has the capacity to generate strong returns for Hudbay shareholders.  The focus of the Flin Flon area Triple Seven and Reed mines is maximizing values as the mines approach the end of their lives. Hudbay has re-sequenced the Triple Seven Mine plan to prioritize stopes containing higher zinc grades in order to take advantage of favorable expected zinc prices.

Community Futures Greenstone is hosting a series of four free Lunch and Learn workshops on Branding and Marketing.  Their Manager Becky Cianflone says the first workshop is on April 19th and is called Creating Your Brand asking what kind of message do you want your business to convey.  She explains people often think that a brand is simply their logo or the color scheme but it’s so much more that that.  She says it’s what do people think about, how do they feel when they see your brand and your business, your color scheme and how does that connect to your target audience.

You can bring your lunch and attend the workshop Wednesday, April 19th from 12 to 1 at the Northern Mining Academy at 2 Hart Avenue.  An RSVP would be appreciated by calling 687-6967 or email admin@cfgreenstone.com but walk ins are welcome.  Three future workshops on marketing and advertising will be held in May.
