Mine Rescue

The Manitoba Provincial Mine Rescue Competition was hosted this past weekend in Snow Lake at Hudbay’s Lalor operations, bringing together mine rescue teams from across Manitoba. They were put through high-pressure emergency scenarios including search and rescue, first aid, firefighting, technical problem-solving, and working through simulated underground emergencies.

Ashton Crone, Director of Business Planning for Hudbay Minerals Incorporated, says teams walk into timed scenarios without knowing exactly what they’ll face.

“So, teams lock into a timed blind scenario, ranging from smoke filled tunnels, complex first aid emergencies with multiple casualties to fire and technical problems. They have to solve these technical puzzles in real time and often with zero prior knowledge on what’s behind the door. They’re a very skilled team; I got to witness that this past weekend. I would say that’s one of the most impressive things about watching a competition like this.”

Team Vale Thompson took top honours at this year’s Competition.
