After a devastating summer in Denare Beach where there was significant loss to homes and businesses due to the wildfires, there is a big event coming up in February to bring the community together.
The 4th annual Jimmy Custer Dog Sled Races will take place the weekend of February the 14th and 15th.
Wally Olson tells us this event has really picked up in momentum the last few years. " We have had a ton of support for this event and the majority of teams are from out of town. Last year we had two teams from Quebec and a team from the Northwest Territories and that was good to see. There is a dog sled race circuit that go's on the following weekend with the prestigious races in the Pas, the Trappers Festival. That is why we choose the weekend we do as the mushers are in the area and loking for a race."
Last year they had a total of 31 entries, which was a personal best. A total of $10,000.00 in prizes will be awarded and this year the Dog Sled Races will be part of the Denare Beach Winter Festival. Northland Ford will also be on hand giving away free hotdogs and hot chocolate on the Saturday.
