On December 16th, Grand Rapids RCMP received a report of a pickup truck travelling out onto Cedar Lake and falling through the ice. This occurred approximately 75 meters from shore near the Manitoba Hydro boat launch, located west of the Grand Rapids Generating Station.
RCMP, along with local EMS, the Grand Rapids Fire Department and Manitoba Hydro, immediately attended to the area to conduct a search.
Investigators were able to determine that the vehicle, containing a male and female passenger, drove out onto the ice when it broke through. The two occupants were unable to escape the vehicle before it went under.
The fire department launched a zodiac to conduct a search in the nearby open water with the RCMP launching a drone to conduct an aerial search but it was unsuccessful.
The RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team is continuing its search.
Grand Rapids RCMP continues to investigate.
