A Strong Contingent Of Residents From Channing Made Their Way To Council Chambers Tuesday Night

The residents were there to share their objections on a public hearing on a re-zoning bylaw that would affect the highway going through Channing.

The Company Strong Pine out of Saskatchewan has purchased land in Channing and will be building a facility in the community as they want to transfer silica sand from Saskatchewan into Manitoba. It would be brought in by trucks from Saskatchewan and then shipped from Channing by rail out to BC.

Residents filled out notice of objections at the meeting and those notices will be sent out to the Manitoba Government for final say.

Members of City Council recently attended the Association of Manitoba Municipalities Conference in Winnipeg and felt they made major headway meeting with different ministers and a one on one meeting with the Premiere Wab Kinew.

Wildfires was a big part of the discussion that included how to better prepare if this ever happens again, lack of health care during the evacuation,  funding for wildfire training and border issues between Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Flin Flon Mayor George Fontaine concluded the meeting by congratulating former Flin Flon Councillor Karen MacKinnon on her Lifetime Honorary Award at the recent AMM and he also commented on the passing of long time resident Ron Dodds.

Ron recently passed away  and Fontaine mentioned how he will be missed by the community for all his volunteer work including many hours spent at the Flin Flon Museum.
