Truth and Reconciliation Day, also known as Orange Shirt Day took place across the country yesterday including a special ceremony in Flin Flon.
A memorial art installation took place on behalf of the Flin Flon Indigenous Reconciliation Committee at Pioneer Square. The City of Flin Flon’s Steve Lytwyn sits on this committee and he mentioned that this is something that they have been planning for a long time. " So the project Walking The Home Trail Of Truth has been on the go for several years. I just came into the Reconciliation Committee when I was elected to City Council. I think they were planning something before I was even elected, so it has been at least four years in the making. So we wanted to see what we could do as a City and a Community and I always refer to it as the Tri- Community. We want to recognize everyone in Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach and the surrounding area."
The art installation was funded by the Northern Neighbors Foundation and Elders on behalf of Mino- Pimatisiwan committee. The sculpture was designed by Doug Dimitri which is a giant turtle made of stone and Copper inside a tipi.
