It is Safe Boating Week in Canada, and the Canadian Safe Boating Council in conjunction with Lifesaving Society of Manitoba wants to promote safe and responsible boating practises to the estimated 15 million boaters in Canada.
Manitoba has one of the highest boating fatality rates in the country so the Safe Boating Council wants to remind everyone to get out and enjoy all the attractions safely.
The goal of the week is to ensure Canadians who head out in any type of boat have the appropriate knowledge to help them have a safe day on the water.
The timing of the week is perfectly aligned with the unofficial start of summer and a time when many boating fatalities occur.
The five key boating initiatives that boaters need to remember is: wear a life jacket, boat sober, take a boating course, be prepared which is both yourself and vessel and be aware of the risks of cold water.
