At yesterday’s Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce meeting members learned about the Individual Achievement Account Project at Creighton Community School. Director of Education Bob Smith says the program started about 15 months ago and is a program designed to provide at risk students with some financial literacy skills and some transitional work skills to help to prepare them for the workplace.
Principal Stacy Lair and School Coordinator Carol Sutherland explained the program involves class work, work placement and matches students with meaningful employment which could involve chamber members as employers. Lair says a lot of students have successfully transitioned to paid employment and they’ve had a turn around in their school performance in the mornings as well because of going to afternoon work placements. She adds its made a big difference in their academic performance, their confidence and planning for the future and planning for that transition out of school.
Any business interested in the program can contact the school for more information.
