Culture Center Naming At Northlands College

Northlands College held a naming ceremony at their Culture Centre on the Creighton Campus  this past Friday.

The process began about a year and a half ago for who they would like to name the Cultural Center after and decided to name it after Tomson  Highway who has roots on both the Saskatchewan and Manitoba sides of the border.

Karsten Henriksen who is the President and CEO of Northlands College  made the announcement and talks about why they wanted to honor Tomson Highway.

"  So Tomson  Highway has a unique story like the communities of Flin Flon and Creighton is connected to both Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He has very strong connections and a unique background to this region. Tomson's father is from Pelican Narrows and Tomson was born on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan and that what really represents the Creighton campus. At the same time it represents the values that we aspire to at Northlands College,  and that is the commitment to Indigenization and our commitment to truith and reconcilliation and celebrating our languages."

Tomson  Highway has had many accomplishments which include being a best selling author, an Officer of the Order of Canada and has been a big advocate of the LGBTQ community.
