MLA Comments On Leaf Rapids Evacuation

Forest fires continue to decimate the country coast to coast and there are a number of fires burning across Northern Manitoba including a major blaze around Leaf Rapids. Residents were evacuated to Thompson last week as firefighters try to get the fire under control.

MLA Tom Lindsay talks about the various challenges that are happening with this evacuation. " The most important things for folks right now is getting timely information, properly shared with them so they know what's going on, making sure they are  getting vouchers for food and medical attention they need. The other really important thing is getting the power back on in Leaf Rapids and South Indian Lake. A bunch of power poles have burnt up and we are trying to get answers as to when that is going to be restored. Somebody needs to co-ordinate all these things and that seems to be what is missing."

Firefighters are being  brought in from Minnesota to bring additional support and if you are looking for more information on the fire around Leaf Rapids you can e-mail minMIT@manitoba.ca or try calling the Manitoba Emergency Co-ordination center at 1-204-945-5555.
