Council is open to ideas on how to use a proposed hotel tax

At their meeting last night Flin Flon City Council passed on second reading a bylaw to impose a tax on hotel rooms in order to support community enhancement projects and destination marketing.

Dave Brooks from the Victoria Inn asked for clarification on how this money will be spent saying it should be to promote our community through marketing and advertising to bring visitors and conventions to the city.  He said instead of the five percent suggested they should impose a set fee per room which would be easier for hotels to manage. Councilor Colleen McKee said they are open to ideas on how the money should be used to promote and enhance Flin Flon.  Deputy Mayor Tim Babcock said they can’t do final reading on the bylaw until it’s approved by the province.

Council also thanked the Salvation Army for putting on a Mayor and Council appreciation barbeque prior to last night’s meeting.
