They Gathered to Remember Thursday Night.

The United Steelworkers Local 7106 held a ceremony at their monument to mark the National Day of Mourning.  Health and Safety Rep Shaleen Lycan explained it’s a time to remember workers who have died or been injured on the job. She explained…..

“USW along with other workers across Canada have and continue to fight for safe and adequate working conditions.  This is rarely an easy job but it can be rewarding when issues are brought to light and corrected before someone gets hurt. Thank you to all the hard working individuals who have found the courage to speak up when a safety or health concern is found in the workplace.  It is workers like you that help keep others safe.  Speaking up when you identify an unsafe condition is so important.  I urge all of you to stand up, speak up and bring up safety concerns to your employer.  Everybody had a right to refuse unsafe work and I believe there’s a safe solution for everything, but problems must first be identified and communicated.  Whether you’re an employer, supervisor, contractor or worker you have a role to play in keeping the workplace safe.”

Wreaths were laid by various union and community representatives.
