An Abandoned Mine Remediation Project Near Creighton Has Been Completed.

The Saskatchewan government recently completed remediation activities at the abandoned Newcor mine site near Creighton.  Remediation work included the installation of an engineered cover system over contaminated waste rock and soil, a permanent cover over the mine shaft, removal of remaining building foundations and contouring and revegetation of the site.

QM Points LP and SNC Lavalin oversaw the remediation and engineering work which took 13 weeks to complete and was within the proposed 1.6 million dollar cost estimate for the project.

Located less than two kilometers southwest of Creighton the Newcor mine site is publicly accessible but the Ministry of Environment asks that users refrain from any activities that could disturb the new topsoil and harm the growth of new vegetation.

Remediation of five other abandoned mine sites identified by the ministry on Crown Land in the province will proceed in the coming years.
