A group of northern Manitoba citizens is demanding action be taken by the province to make travelling on Highway 6 safer for motorists.

The hashtag Safer Highway 6 group wants the Manitoba government to fund and implement a three-year plan to improve the stretch of road between Thompson and Winnipeg.

Specific asks include passing lanes every 50 kilometres; rumble strips at key locations, wider shoulders for drivers to park off road safely and faster response times for major highway accidents.

The group recently launched an online petition for these changes following the death of Thompson MLA Danielle Adams, who died in a head-on collision with a semi-truck while driving to Winnipeg last month.

Nearly 3 thousand people have signed the Change DOT org petition.
