Hudbay officially opened its New Britannia Mill in Snow Lake yesterday afternoon. In 2008 Hudbay’s exploration and geology team found the gold zone in the Lalor deposit and 13 years later the gold ore is being processed at the New Britannia mill.
The New Britannia expansion includes the refurbishing of the gold plant and adding a new copper flotation facility ensuring increased production at the Snow Lake operations. Hudbay anticipates annual gold production from the Lalor and Snow Lake operations will increase to over 180 thousand ounces during the first six full years of operation and they expect 17 years of operation at New Britannia.
The Director of human resources, external and Indigenous affairs Richard Trudeau stated Hudbay’s story began here in Manitoba and nearly a century later their commitment to Manitoba continues as today marks the start of an exciting new chapter for our company, the Town of Snow Lake and the Province.
Manitoba Resource Development Minister Ralph Eichler added congratulations to Hudbay on the opening of the New Britannia mill which he notes will process ore on site and help keep more jobs in Northern Manitoba.
