The Manitoba Government is Planning to Eliminate Most Elected School Boards and to Merge School Divisions.

Education Minister Cliff Cullen announced this afternoon the government is accepting the recommendations made in the Manitoba Kindergarten to Grade Twelve Education Review. He says changes will be put forward in a bill as part of the Best Education Starts Today strategy. He says the Provincial Education Authority will be established to oversee the delivery of K to 12 education over 15 regions. This will sse the consolidation of shared services like procurement, investments in information technology, workforce planning and many others.  He adds it further enhances parental involvement by creating a Provincial Advisory Council on education.  These members will be elected by school community council executives within the new 15 regions across Manitoba.  He says this new model will see up to 40 million dollars re-directed to our classrooms where students need it most.

Cullen says Manitoba education will be undertaking public consultations on a variety of areas as it builds a roadmap for the future on topics such as curriculum development, teacher training and learning, and ways to support the most vulnerable students.
