This week is Red Tape Awareness Week for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Director for the Prairies Jonathan Alward gives an example of red tape that many business owners may have had to deal with. He explains one of the ones for him that always drives him absolutely crazy is trying to find information on the government website and everyone’s been dealing with COVID-19 over the past year or so and he thinks a lot of people can relate to this.  He says as new rules come in and change which they seem to be doing just about every single day trying to get that information as clear and concise as possible and it could be health programs that sound exactly the same so it’s trying to figure out what’s actually available to your business, it could be just trying to figure out the right link for the right updated information.  He notes a lot of these documents tied to COVID-19 prevention orders are all written in legalese and government speak which is another layer of red tape as it’s really difficult to understand what they’re getting after.

Alward says Manitoba had been doing well when it comes to reducing red tape, noting the province has the processes in place to review red tape and track how it’s growing.
