January is Alzheimers Awareness Month and The Alzheimers Society of Manitoba Continues to Shed Light on the Disease.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative brain disease, and is associated with aging.

The Program Director at the organization Erin Crawford says the Society is focusing their awareness campaign this year on the theme “I Live With Dementia”. She explains there is still a lot of stigma people tell them with a dementia diagnosis and what she means by that is they feel nervous or worried about people’s reaction to them, they know that people are not sure how to interact and support somebody with dementia so the idea behind this campaign is really to say here’s some stories of people who are living this experience who can tell you about what it’s like and once you see some faces associated with it it demystifies things for people and if we can make our communities more comfortable and supportive and embracing of people with dementia it really increases those people’s ability to continue to engage in their community.
