The Red Ribbons Will Be Replaced.

Flin Flon School Board Chair Murray Skeavington has issued a public red ribbon apology letter.  It was addressed to students, staff, families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and Elder Margaret Head-Steppan.

It explains in February all schools in the Division along with students participated in a joint project with the Women’s Resource Centre where they placed red ribbons on school yard fences to bring awareness to and honor missing and murdered women and girls.  He said the ties were to remain on the fence for 365 days and were to be returned to our Elder to be disposed of according to ceremonial protocols but regretfully the ties were removed from the fences when classes were suspended.  He wants to assure students, families, staff and Elder that this was not done with malice or any intention to disrespect the cultural protocols or families.

On behalf of the School Division he extended his sincerest apology noting we will use this as a teachable moment and ensured when school returns the red ribbon ties will be replaced on the fences following proper protocols.
