The Recycling Program Had Its Best Year.

The Flin Flon Environment Council held their annual meeting last night.  Recycling Center Administrator Deb Odegaard reported they recycled 510 tonnes last year beating the previous record of 500 in 2007.  She noted commercial tonnage decreased by 6.4 tonnes which is concerning as it reflects household recycling but that may be related to less newspaper in the mix. They recycled a record number of household batteries at 655 kilograms and sent out 30 tonnes of electronics. Odegaard also noted the red bag curbside program averages 10 to 15 bags weekly and is covering costs and pickup from businesses continues to be a major part of their operations. 21 tubskids, 35 barrels and 3 pails of hazardous waste were shipped from the Depot at the landfill.

Odegaard presented the Employee of the Year Award to Mike Anderson, Board Member Award to Bob Lyons and Volunteer Award to Ray Berg.  She concluded by noting advertising to encourage more people to start recycling will be the focus of this year.
