Manitobas NDP Leader Wab Kinew met with a variety of people in Flin Flon on Friday.

One of the issues raised was northern health care.  Kinew says the need to stop cuts and expand services was highlighted by the unfortunate death last week of a northern man on a medical trip by bus to Winnipeg who was also involved in the Northern Patient Transport Program and that’s an issue that cuts across community lines and affects a lot of people in the north.  He says they’ve been hearing a lot about changes to that program, escorts not being provided anymore, harder and harder for people to get air transport approved so that’s an issue they’re going to press on in the immediate future.

Kinew called for a federal and provincial inquiry into the death.  He says there’s also a need to have more doctors in the north and one way to do that is by training more northerners starting in high school with a emphasis on the sciences and also ensure there are state of the art health facilities in the north so people can get care closer to home.
