The Churchill Rail Line Needs Government Support.

Churchill Keewatinook Aski Member of Parliament Niki Ashton says Omnitrax’s reaction to the rail line problems to Churchill is offensive.  She says it’s a private company that has benefited from public subsidies and instead of keeping the line maintained properly they have let it fall into disrepair.  Ashton says the federal government needs to take action. She says its time for the government to step in and take the Port back to work with Churchill and First Nations in our north to take it over and that is the only way forward.  She adds the province does need to be part of the solution in terms of support for maintenance at this current stage.  She says the province has to do much more than just increasing the milk subsidy as people are in a very difficult situation right now in Churchill and along the Bayline as well and its just simply not good enough to have the Premier of Manitoba shrug his responsibilities and say its somebody else’s problem.

Ashton says it was a Liberal government that privatized the rail line in the 90’s.
