Students Are Concerned About Smoking on Main Street and A Curfew is in Effect.

At their meeting last night Flin Flon City Council received a letter from the grade six Hershmiller Ruth Betts Community School Tobacco Tackle Team.  They have been learning about health and environmental issues due to tobacco and ask why are we allowing tobacco use near entrances of buildings?  They would like to know if it is possible to make Main Street a smoke free area and if that’s not possible pass a bylaw requiring smokers to be five meters away from a building entrance and/or have a weekly cigarette butt clean up or more receptacles to deposit butts.  The letter signed by the teacher and 14 students who cleaned up cigarette butts around the hospital entrance was referred to the Committee of the Whole Council and will be reviewed with the Chamber of Commerce.

Council also passed on final reading a curfew bylaw presented at their last meeting.  It will be in effect for children 15 and under at 10:30 Sunday to Thursday nights and 11:59 Fridays and Saturdays until 6 a.m. It will go into effect immediately.  Council received only positive comments since the bylaw was proposed.
