Our School Division is Struggling with Numbers but has Many Excellent Programs.

Flin Flon School Division Superintendent Blaine Veitch told the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce yesterday the division faces a number of challenges including a declining number of students.  He said they’re down to 977 students this September so it’s about 17 years of straight decline and that’s been one of their challenges to try and manage a system as you’re getting smaller.  He says Hapnot is at about 285 students so they’re under the 300 mark now, Many Faces has around 30, Ruth Betts has about 220 and McIsaac is around 400 students.

Veitch added they have 78 full time equivalent teachers with a teacher pupil ratio of 15.9 pupils per teacher.  He said the division has developed many partnerships with other school divisions, local agencies and businesses, they continue to focus on literacy and numeracy and would like to see more students get involved in the Vocational Education program adding they also have one of the top outdoor education programs in the province.
