That Call About Your Hydro Bill May be a Scam.

Manitoba Hydro residential and business customers continue to be targeted by a phone scam.  They report several customers have received phone calls that appear to come from the utility demanding immediate payment. A typical scam call originates from a toll free number or in some cases Hydro’s phone number appears in the caller ID. The caller asks a few questions then state the customer’s account is in arrears, must be paid immediately and they are provided with payment options.

Manitoba Hydro says they do make reminder phone calls to customers who are in arrears and may demand payment to prevent disconnection of service but they do not accept payment over the phone, accept PayPal or credit card payments or ask you to wire money.

If you receive a call and doubt its authenticity hang up immediately and call Manitoba Hydro, the local RCMP non-emergency phone number as well as calling Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501.
