Testing for Kidney Disease Can Be Available in the North.

This is Kidney Awareness Month. The Communications Manager for the Manitoba Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada Melanie Ferris says Manitoba has the highest rate of end stage kidney disease in Canada.  She explains most people don’t really think about their kidneys too much but they are as important as your heart. She says the kidneys filter toxins out of your body so if you don’t have properly functioning kidneys then you’re going to start feeling really sick.  She adds there are no symptoms of kidney disease in the first few stages so they do call it the silent killer and what they want people to do in Manitoba is to ask their doctor to test them for kidney disease.

Ferris says they have a new program called Healthier Together which is a screening program that will travel to northern communities including Flin Flon with a nurse and pharmacist if people are interested in having it come here.  For information you can visit their website www.kidney.ca/manitoba.
