History Was Celebrated on the Weekend

The Northern Gateway Museum in Denare Beach held their annual Discovery Day on Sunday.  Historian Les Oystryk spoke on a new display honoring Lance Corporal Marcel Chappuis who joined the RCMP in 1928 and was stationed in Sturgeon Landing and then opened a one man detachment in Cumberland House. He traveled into the Denare Beach area frequently with Oystryk relating two incidents.

He explained on December 14th 1931 during a patrol to Denare Beach Chappuis was badly burned in a house fire at the Beaver Lake fur farm and was taken by dog team to Flin Flon General Hospital where he received attention and returned to his detachment in Cumberland House.  He added in March of 1979 at the age of 86 retired officer Chappuis was invited to Denare Beach to act as an honorary race marshall for the famous Last Great Freight Race that originated as part of the Denare Beach Winter Festival.

Chappuis retired from Cumberland House in 1945 and died at his home in Victoria, B.C. on May 29th 1989 at the age of 94.
