City Council Has Supported A Steelworkers Resolution

At their meeting this week Flin Flon City Council received a presentation from Ken Bateman from the United Steelworkers Local 7106 on the Steelworkers national campaign aimed at better enforcement of the Westray Amendment which is a law to hold companies, their directors and executive criminally accountable for a workplace death.  He says the law was the result of the 1992 Westray mine explosion that killed 26 miners yet no one was held accountable and since it was passed unanimously by the House of Commons there have been few criminal charges even though more than nine thousand people have been killed on the job since.

Council passed a resolution supporting the Steelworkers campaign with Councilor Skip Martin opposed.  He says he supports the intent of the motion but was opposed to the phrase killed at work preferring the phrase died at work.
