Our recycling program continues to improve

Recycling Center Administrator Deb Odegaard told the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce the recycling program has seen several changes over the last six months.  She says they no longer sort material here as it is sent to Winnipeg for sorting at a cost of 40 dollars a tonne.  She says on the positive side it saves space, there’s quicker processing, fewer financial challenges, higher morale and fewer mice since the building is not as cluttered.  On the negative side they had to reduce staff from six to four and a half and its more difficult to track recycling trends.

Odegaard also mentioned as of May 1st Creighton is offering free curbside pickup which is working well, Flin Flon is waiting for a recycling trailer that will be centrally located possibly in the Extra Foods lot and the red bag curbside service is now every second week.

Robin Yeo is running a Recycle Everywhere Pilot Project providing free recycling bins for public areas with information available at the Recycling Center.

The community recycled 396 tonnes of material last year as well as 25 tonnes of electronic waste.
