Another Come Back Victory

The Melfort Mustangs grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first period and looked like they were on their way, to finally winning a game at the Whitney Forum. The Mustangs are winless in their last fourteen visits to Flin Flon after another Bomber come back last night.

Hermary and Pickering scored in the first thirteen minutes, before the Bombers responded with goals from Calladine and Empey to make it 2-2 after one. Calladine picked up his team leading 16th of the season.

It looked like we were going to get an offensive explosion, the way the two teams were going back and forth with lots of great chances at both ends of the ice. The score would hold up right until the shoot out. Both Hofley and Romanuik were very good throughout the game, so I had no idea how long the shoot out would take.

Austin Evans who has been money, would shoot first and he did not dissapoint the 600 plus in attendance with a dazzling move to beat Mustang netminder Jack Romanuik to open the scoring. Austin Calladine would shoot next for the Bombers and he fired one off the post.

Flin Flon net minder Simon Hofley stopped both Pickering and Hermary before Adam Fauchox blew one by him to tie it. So it would come down to Parker Evans Campbell who would be the third Bomber shooter  and if he scored the Bombers would take the shoot out and the all important two points.

Campbell would take his time crossing the blue line slowly before beating Romanuik five hole to send the Whitney Forum into a frenzy. You can chalk up another come from behind win for the come back kids, this time 3-2 in the shoot out. This is Flin Flon's second shoot out win over Melfort this season, and they lead the season series 4-3.

Once again the Bombers were able to shake off a tough loss to Nipawin on Tuesday, and have moved to one point out of the playoffs. Battleford did Flin Flon a big favour by beating Weyburn 4-1, which means the Bombers are now in control of their own destiny.

The Bombers have three games remaining against Yorkton, Laronge and Melfort, and if they win all three they are guaranteed to get in. The Wings only have two games remaining a home and home with Estevan and even if they win them both, they would finish one point behind Flin Flon.

Once again a huge victory for the SJHL as it is going right down to the final weekend to decide things. Flin Flon will get a tough test Friday when the defending champs from Yorkton come to town fresh off clinching the Viterra Division with a convincing 11-1 win over Nipawin. Yorkton has beat the Bombers in all three matchups this season and former team mate Brett Boehm comes back to the Forum for a second time as a visitor. Boehm has been red hot and can possibly dash their playoff hopes with a strong game Friday.

Don't forget Saturday's game is a special 6:30 start as the Bombers will be spearheading a fundraiser to beat cancer. Flin Flon will be wearing pink jerseys that you will be able to bid on, plus lots of other great draws and raffles throughout the evening. It would be a great night to pack in over 1000 fans for this great fundraising event.

These young Bombers also deserve the support, who have to be admired for their exceptional will to keep winning and never say die attitudes. This is one of the best runs with a dedicated young group I have ever witnessed in 20 years covering this club.

The playoffs are close and this group can taste it. No broadcast Friday, but we are back on the air Saturday with a special Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:10, play by play at 7:30.
