Back To Back For The First Time In 2014

It was supposed to be simple, the consensus was the Flin Flon Bombers had thrown in the towel and would simply coast the rest of the season. Somebody forgot to tell the 23 young men that put that jersey on night to night, who have done everything but that.

I have said it right from the time the Bombers pulled the trigger January the 10th, when they unloaded McCombie, Blair, Buffalo and Boehm, this is a team that just doesn't give up.

Even on the last road trip when Flin Flon lost to Weyburn and Estevan by scores of 6-0 and 7-1, I did not see a team that did not have the desire to win.

Now we are starting to see the Bombers get rewarded for their hard work with back to back wins for the first time in 2014.

Flin Flon scored six goals en route to a huge 6-4 home win against Melfort on Friday. Seamus Maguire led the way with his first two goals of the season, with a pair from Eric Pedersen and singles coming from Parker Evans Campbell and Connor Bucsis. Flin Flon got strong goaltending from Simon Hofley as the Bombers got out shot 52-31.

The Bombers took that momentum into Laronge on Saturday and fell behind 2-0 early in the first period, before Eric Pedersen scored his seventh at 13:04 to get his team back in the game. Laronge would answer early in the second retaking their two goal lead when new comer Daulton Siwak scored a power play goal to make it 3-1. That lead would hold till the second intermission.

Flin Flon did not panic and chipped away at the lead in the third period, when the hottest Bomber forward Eric Pedersen scored his second of the night and eighth of the season to get the Bombers within one at 3-2.

That would spark the young club who would tie the game at 6:13 when 16 year old Dustin Perrilat scored his second of the year in his last game this season. Perrilat is a call up from triple a, and can only dress in so many games.

This would set the stage for Tyson Empey who scored a beautiful goal at 10:57 of the final frame , when d-man Robbie Cameron rushed the puck down the ice on a two on one and fed a nice pass in the slot and Empey lifted the back hand over the shoulder of Ice Wolve net minder Dasan Sydora.

It was Empey's fifth of the season and maybe the biggest goal of his SJ career, as this stood up as the winning goal. It was the first time the Bombers had won a game this year, when trailing after two periods. Flin Flon was 0 and 20, this season when trailing after two.

With the victory the Bombers leap frog the Ice Wolves for third in the Sherwood Division and are only four points behind Nipawin for the final playoff spot in the league. They play two more times this season. The Bomber record is now :19-27-0-2, with eight games remaining in the season. Six of those are against Sherwood Division teams.

With a nothing to lose approach, the Bombers make their way to the Battleford's Tuesday and back to Laronge on Wednesday. Flin Flon almost beat Battleford at the Whitney Forum back on January the 25th and look forward to the challenge. It won't be easy with the Stars unbeaten in their last 15 games.

Once again you can count on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com for all the action both nights with the Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:10 and play by play at 7:30.
