Bombers Need Wins

Mike Reagan made it quite clear, on the CFAR Post Game Show from Melfort on Wednesday, that he was pleased with the effort but  they need to start getting results.

The Bombers dropped both games on the road to Nipawin and Melfort by scores of 4-1 and 6-3.

The good news, someone other than Austn Calladine scored a goal.  Empey, Soubry and Allison all broke out with some much needed offense, all be it in a losing cause.

It was a gutsy performance from Flin Flon who fought back from a 4-1 deficit to make it 4-3 early in the third period. New Melfort bench boss Trevor Blevins called a time out and was able to settle down his team and kill the Bomber momentum at the same time.

The Mustangs came back with a couple of goals from Fauchox and Frei and pretty much took the wind out of the Bomber's sails with those two goals.

BOTTOM LINE if Flin Flon wants to make the playoffs they need to start winning hockey games. If the playoffs were to start tomorrow, the Bombers would be on the outside looking in.

The top ten overall get in, and Flin Flon has 34 points, which is one point behind Weyburn and three points behind Notre Dame. The good news is the Bombers have two games in hand on the Wings and one game in hand on the Hounds.

Flin Flon could still win their division, but will need to get on a roll. The Bombers are starting to fade and are eight points back of Nipawin, six behind Melfort and four behind Laronge. Flin Flon has games in hand on both the Stangs and Ice Wolves.

The Bombers will be a factor in the division no matter what with eight of their last sixteen games against Sherwood teams. Not only can the Bombers improve their fates, but could also end up being a thorn in the side of some other teams.

It will not get any easier, with the hottest team in the SJHL coming to town for a pair of games this weekend. The Battleford North Stars hit the Whitney Forum tonight with wins in nine of their last ten games.

It should be an electric atmosphere with former captain Cam Blair making his first appearance in a Star's uniform. Cam was traded to the Stars January the tenth for forward Austin Evans and a player to be named later.

Cam in my opinion is the best overall player in the league and has been great for the Stars picking up a pair of goals in their last win over Humboldt. We will try to catch up with Cam for an interview in our broadcast Saturday night in the second intermission.

The Bomber effort has certainly been there the last four games  and hopefully they can get a bounce or two, and pick up a much needed victory tonight. Both teams are very good defensively with the Stars only giving up 116 goals in 44 games. Flin Flon has given up 112 in 40 games played.

Offense remains the problem for the maroon and white, who have only been able to muster 99 goals in 40 games. The Bombers are the only team in the SJHL that have not hit the 100 goal mark this year.

This may look like a mis-match on paper, but this is the SJHL and anyone can beat any one on a given night. I have talked to a lot of the Bomber players in the last week and they feel very confident they can make the playoffs.

Make sure you join us for the broadcast tomorrow on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com, with the Murray GM Coach's Show hitting the air waves at 7:15. We will also have all four games from the southern road trip starting next Tuesday in Yorkton.
