Bombers And Mustangs Split

The Flin Flon Bombers and Melfort Mustangs split their home and home affair to begin the SJHL regular season this past weekend.

The Mustangs came out to play Friday and were able to keep the Bomber offense at bay with a 3-0 victory.

Keiss and Sloan scored power play goals in the first and second period and Fauchox scored into the empty net with less than a minute remaining as the Mustangs were able to win their home opener in front of 1,740 fans.

Devin Buffalo was the Bombers best player stopping 33 out of 36 shots and was very good early as the Mustangs outshot Flin Flon 13-5 in the first period. If Buffalo was not on his game it could of been much worse.

The Whitney Forum was the stage for the next night in Flin Flon and the Bombers did not dissapoint the home crowd. Dillan McCombie scored just 42 seconds into the game when he took a Brock Hounsell deflection off a skate and wired a booming slapshot past Austin Rediron to open the scoring.

That would stand up as the game winner as Devin Buffalo had another impressive night stopping all 39 Melfort shots for the shutout.

Cam Blair added a insurance goal mid-way through the third period to give Flin Flon a little more beathing room.

The Mustangs outshot Flin Flon in both contests 75-61 and ended up going 2 for 7 on the power play. The Bombers went 0 for 5.

It was a perfect night with the Bomber Alumni consisting of ( Gerry Hart, Tom Gilmore, Jack Turner, Cal Hammond among others)  presenting Bomber Coach Mike Reagan with a cheque for 15,000.00 to go towards the new Bomber bus before the game with a nice ceremony at ice level.

The Bombers also donned their new third jersey which is the uniform they wore when they came back into the SJHL in 1983. It is very sharp and seemed to go over very well with the fans in attendance which was 1,250.

Mike Reagan was happy with the effort on Saturday and had this to say on the CFAR post game show.

" I was extremely happy with the effort on Saturday and thought all 4 lines came to play. I thought our 4th line was spectacular Paul Soubry, Ram Brar and Evan Akkerman they were awesome tonight and I know they feel really good with their performance." Tyson Empey came to play again tonight and has been our most consistant player the first 2 games and is going to be a heck of a player for us."

The Bombers will get a week off between games and prepare for Doug Johnston and a new look Nipawin Hawk team who come to town on Saturday. Nipawin will look a lot differant than the team the Bombers faced in last year's playoffs with 8 players that have graduated or been moved since their playoff loss to the Bombers last March.

All the action on CFAR-590 and flinflononline.com. we are on the air at 7:10.
