The Flin Flon Judo Club has had a busy couple of weeks.
On March 25th they had 3 members compete in the Watrous Regional Tournament. The 3 that went had great results, seeing that this is the first tournament of the year for all of them.
In the U10 -40kg Newaza Division (ground fighting only), Jacob Hiebert went undefeated winning all 3 of his matches, for a first place finish. He followed that up in the U10 -40kg Tachiwaza Division (standing) with another undefeated performance to place first as well. This was Jacob's first tournament in over a year, so the results were very exciting.
In the U10 +50kg Newaza Division Rylan Santos, being in his first year of judo, and competing in his first tournament ever, went 2-2 for a third place finish. Rylan had some fantastic matches, and has really shown a lot of growth in his first year.
In the U12 +58kg Newaza Division, Jacob Wiens put on the best performance of his career, going a perfect 3-0 for a first place finish. Jacob really put on a technical display in his victories. In the U12 TachiWaza Division Jacob overcame some novice refereeing, to win the bronze medal.
The boys had a great weekend, worked hard and got great results and they are hoping that continues for the Saskatchewan Provincial Championships, being held in Moose Jaw on April 15th and 16th.
On April 1st and 2nd Josie Wiens attended the Judo Saskatchewan Female retreat. The guest coach for the retreat was Canadian Judo pioneer Sandra Greaves. Sandra is a 2x Olympian, Pan Am Games gold medalist and 8x National Champion. Josie received valuable knowledge and experience, that can only come from working with someone of Sandra's caliber.
We will post the results and keep you up to date on the athletes from Flin Flon who will be competing in the Saskatchewan Provincial Championships in Moose Jaw starting April the 15th.
