Bombers Hang On To Clip Hawks

It may not have been their most complete game, but the Flin Flon Bombers still took care of buisiness last night and held off the Nipawin Hawks 4 to 3.

Flin Flon is unbeaten in regulation in their last 6 games and sit in second spot overall with just 3 games reamaining in the regular season.

The Bombers came out flying in the opening period, out shooting the Hawks 21 to 11, but Nipawin had the only goal of the opening frame.

The Hawks actually scored on their first shot of the game when Alyandro Deleon fed a nice pass in front of the Bomber net  to Xavier Bedard who netted his 10th of the year.

That held up til very late in the second period, when Flin Flon got a big break and a puck bounced off Damon Cunningham's shoulder and Alexi Sylvestre shovelled in the rebound.

This came with less than 2 seconds remaining in the middle frame.

The Bombers rode the momentum into the third period and scored three quick goals courtesy of Ethan Mercer (5), Brent Gulenchyn (7) and Joey Lies picking up his 4th.

Lies scored the nicest goal of the night finishing a nice tic tac toe play  with Mercer and Zac Cain.

This put the Bombers up 4 to 1, but the game was far from over.

Nipawin was able to score a late power play goal when Tre Fouquette fired a puck in from the blue line. Then with the goalie pulled, the Hawks scored again when Carson Dobson put a puck in on the wrap around with only 10 seconds remaining.

The Hawks did win the next face-off and got the puck in deep, but the Bombers were able to hang on.

I give Nipawin a lot of credit, they definately didn't quit and if the game would of had more time left they may have pulled this one out. They were all over the Bombers in the final few minutes.

Final shots were 41 to 32 in the Bombers favour and Harmon Laser Hume beat his former team for the 5th time this season.

This was a big two points for the Bombers who have guaranteed themselves at least third place. Flin Flon will improve to 36-13-2-2 and also won their 21st game at home.

Melfort remains 10 points behind Flin Flon with just 3 games to go and Laronge is 9 back with 2 left on their schedule.

The Bombers and Wolves will meet for a home and home next weekend to close out the regular  season. Melfort will be in town on Tuesday.

Flin Flon still could finish second, but it will depend on what Humboldt does in their last 5 games. They picked up a big 5 to 3 win last night in Battleford.

Those two teams will play again tonight in Humboldt.

Congratulations to a couple of Members of the Bombers organization who are nominated for year end awards.
