The Flin Flon Bombers managed a split this past weekend against the number one team in the country, the Battleford Stars.
On Friday I can't ever remember a game where I saw a team play an entire game mistake free and the Bombers won convincingly 6 to 0.
Flin Flon totally controlled the game and didn't give the Stars hardly any offensive zone time.
The Bombers fed off the crowd for Hockey Night In The North and treated the 1400 in attendance to their best effort of the season.
Alex Von Sprecken led the way with a pair of powerplay goals, his fourth and fifth. Other Bomber goals came from Brent Gulenchyn, Liam Bridger, Alexi Sylvestre and Cole Duperreault with his team leading 34th.
It was a complete domination with Flin Flon out shooting Battleford 48 to 15 enroute to their 31st win of the season.
This was just the fourth loss in regulation all season by the Stars.
Harmon Laser Hume picked up his fourth shutout of the year and picked up his 21st win.
SJHL MVP candidate Josh Kotai was the Stars best player despite giving up 6 goals on 48 shots.
You knew the Stars would be better on Saturday and they were.
On the strength of three second period goals, Battleford rebounded with a 4 to 2 win last night.
Jackson Allan led the way with a pair of goals and set up Bradley Blake on a one timer as the Stars jumped out 3 to 0 early in the second.
Flin Flon was able to stop the bleeding with a late second period goal from Zach Cain who re-directed a Rylan Pearce shot for his 20th of the year.
The Bombers came out for the third flying and did get the deficit to one, when Jacob Vockler scored right off the face-off on a power play.
Unfortunately the Bombers couldn't get another puck past Josh Kotai, and SJHL leading scorer Kian Bell would score on a break away and gave the Stars a big insurance goal to make the final 4 to 2.
Once again the Bombers out shot the Stars 40 to 24 but the Stars were able to score some timely goals and Kotai was lights out.
It looks like it was a costly weekend for Flin Flon who lost Jeremi Tremblay to an upper body injury on Friday. Head Coach and GM, Mike Reagan expects him to be out a couple of weeks.
Cole Duperreault also left last night's game after blocking a shot with his hand and his status right now is not known.
After the weekend the Bombers find themselves first in the Sherwood but have fallen to third overall at 31-13-2-1. They are two points behind Humboldt who beat Estevan twice on the weekend.
Laronge is also breathing down the Bombers necks, and are just two points behind after beating Kindersley last night. Flin Flon does have 4 games in hand on the Wolves.
Battleford will improve to a league best 41-4-2-1.
A big weekend ahead for the Maroon and White who head to Nipawin tomorrow, and will entertain the Weyburn Red Wings in a pair of games this weekend.
The Wings are anything but a free two points any more and come to Flin Flon this weekend one of the hottest teams in the SJHL. Weyburn has won 7 of their last 10 and are tied with Nipawin for 7th overall.
Weyburn is also within striking distance of Estevan for 6th and are just 4 points back with three games in hand.
