Bombers Beat The Soo

The Flin Flon Bombers opened up the Centennial Cup in Estevan with a solid 6 to 1 win over the Soo Thunderbirds yesterday afternoon.

After a realatively slow start, the Bombers hit the board late in the first when Jaxon Martens fired a puck past the Soo net minder Noah Metivier. Gabriel Shipper carried the puck into the zone, fell down and Martens picked up the loose puck and fired it off the post.

The Soo argued the puck never crossed the line but the referee signaled goal right away.

Drew Kuzma made it 2-0 just a minute later when he beat Metivier on a nice wrap around and the Bombers carried the play the rest of the game.

Jacob Vockler, Xavier Lapointe, Jaeden Mercier and Brett Wieschorster all found the back of the net as the Bombers cruised to a 6 to 1 win.

Michael Chaffay was the only player to score on Cal Schell yesterday when he grabbed a Bomber turn over and fired a shot just under the cross bar.

Schell didn't have to make a lot of stops yesterday but was good when he had to be and ended up with 15 saves.

Noah Metivier was by far the busier goalie and stopped 24 out of 30 including at least 5 clear cut break aways. Metivier kept his team in it as long as he could.

The Bomber power play struggled early but found it's groove later in the game and went 2 for 6. The Soo were 0 for 2 as Flin Flon was very diciplined.

The Bombers did what they needed to do and it was nice to see them score some goals at Affinity place where they got shut out twice in the leaqgue final.

Flin Flon will get a day off  today before getting back on the ice to face the Ottawa JR Senators tomorrow.

This will be a tougher test as the Senators were ranked fourth in the country and 5 of their players are committed to NCAA schools.

Ottawa is facing Dauphin in their first game of the tournament today.

Don't forget to catch all the action once again tomorrow with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 4:45 MB time with drop of the puck at 5pm.

We will broadcast every Flin Flon Bomber game from the Centennial Cup here on 102.9 CFAR anfd
