Bombers And Bruins Split

The weekend added up to the billing as two of the league's top clubs competed hard in two entertaining hockey games.

The Estevan Bruins made their only two regular season appearances at the Whitney Forum to battle the Flin Flon Bombers.

Friday night saw the Bombers over come a 2-0 deficit in coming back to stun the Bruins 3 to 2 in OT.

Nathan Gagne scored a late goal in the second period which really gave the Bombers a spark coming out for the third.

It didn't take long for the Bombers to tie the game as Mason Kaspick scored less than 2 minutes in to send the team and crowd into a frenzy.

That would hold up til over time and we would see plenty of excitement 3 on 3.

It looked like the Bruins would end it when defenseman Dayton Deics got robbed by Cal Schell on a 2 on 1 with a hard shot going off Schell's left arm.

The Bombers grabbed the rebound and went down the ice the other way and looked like they got stymied by Bruins netminder Boston Bilous.

The puck was initially stopped but a mad scramble insued and Cole Duperreault appeared to jam the puck in for his team leading 11th of the season and OT winner.

Cal Schell was outstanding making 36 saves as the Bombers picked up their 15th win of the season.

It was the Bruins who had to come from behind on Saturday as they trailed the Bombers 2 to 1 in the third period.

Mason Kaspick had put the Bombers up by a goal early in the third before the Bruins tied it on a strange goal by Nolan Jones.

Jones got the puck just inside the Bomber blue line and fired a puck that actually bounced off the ice and through Cal Schell's legs.

Estevan would grab the momentum and got the eventual game winner when Olivier Pouliot beat both Bomber defenseman and got to ther net to flip a back hander over Cal Schell's right shoulder.

Boston Bilous held the fort the rest of the way and the Bruins held on for the 3 to 2 win.

The Bombers had plenty of good chances in this game but couldn't score on the power play and ended up going 0 for 5 including a 5 on 3.

Zac Smith had the Bombers other goal.

A good weekend of hockey which saw the Bruins leave Flin Flon with 3 out of 4 points and Flin Flon got two to improve to 15-7.

They sit first in the Sherwood and fourth over all.

Estevan is 16-4-1-1 and they are second over all, 4 points behind Humboldt.

Next up for the Bombers will be Nipawin to complete the 5 game home stand tomorrow before travelling to Humboldt for a pair of games on the weekend.
