Mustangs Snap Bombers Winning Streak

The Melfort Mustangs made their first visit to the Whitney Forum this season and looked impressive in a solid 4 to 1 win over the Flin Flon Bombers last night.

Things started well for the Maroon and White who got on the board early when Brandon Cianflone got his own rebound and buried his 7th of the season to open the scoring at 5:22 into the opening period.

Little did we know that would be the only puck to beat Melfort starting goalie Tanner Martin who was perfect the rest of the way making 17 saves.

Not to take anything away from him but I didn't think the Bombers really tested him and only mustered 3 shots in the third period, including 2 in the final 30 seconds.

Jacob Delorme was much more busy stopping 37 out of 41 and definately was Flin Flon's best player with a number of big stops.

A tremendous glove save off of Ben Tkachuk in the first period is one that really jumped out at me.

After the Cianflone goal, the Mustangs responded with goals from Deklan Whillans and the eventual game winner from Ryley Lanthier to take a 2 to 1 lead after one.

No goals in the second but the Mustangs would get a couple of insurance goals from Greg Parker and Christian Albertson in the third to take the contest 4 to 1.

Melfort's defense is outstanding and totally shut down the high potent offense from the Bombers,  not allowing a lot of quality chances or shots in tight to the net and reclaimed top spot in the Sherwood Division.

Heading into last night's game the Bombers were looking good with 5 straight wins and a perfect 3-0 road trip from the weekend out scoring the opposition 17 to 6. It just didn't seem to be their night.

After last night's win Melfort is first at 12-4-2-1 and have only one regulation loss since the opening weekend.

Flin Flon will slip to second at 12-4-2 and still have a game in hand on the Mustangs.

These two teams will complete the home and home Thursday in Melfort with the game set to go at 8:30 MB time.

We will have the broadcast on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com starting with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 8:10.
