The Flin Flon Bombers continued their fine play in 2018 and managed to grab 3 out of a possible 4 points against the defending league champs from Battleford.
The Bombers dropped a 4-3 game in OT Friday and thought they deserved a better fate, and were very motivated for Saturday night.
For the second straight night, the Bombers spotted the Stars a 2-0 lead. Urbanski and Kleiboer scored to put Battleford up 2-0 after 1.
After a shaky start in the second, Bomber rookie d- man Calvon Boots went to work scoring a pair of goals, seven seconds apart to quickly tie the game at two. I am going over Bomber stats and rosters throughout the years and I am convinced this is a Bomber record for two fastest goals for a defenseman.
I will post more on this blog once I find out for sure. Boots's two goals deifinately changed the complection of the game and gave the Bombers a lot of momentum.
Vaughan Bamford who played forward this night, would put the Bombers up 3-2 late in the second period for their first lead of the weekend.
The Stars would tie the game early in the third when Chaseton Braid snuck across the Bomber blue line and fooled Brenden Newton with a low snap shot for his 11th of the year.
Flin Flon kept battling, and were rewarded with a bit of a fluky goal when Dylan Burton fought hard along the wall and got a bouncing puck to go past Taryn Kotchorek for the eventual game winner to make the final 4-3.
I have been mentioning Burton a lot in our broadcasts lately and I am impressed with his work ethic and how he is bringing a physical presence to his game. I am not surprised he scored the game winning goal.
Brenden Newton continues to play well and was one of the best Bombers on the weekend stopping 31 out of 34 shots, while Kotchorek stopped 21 out of 25. Neither team could strike on the PP, with the Bombers 0 for 5 and the Stars 0 for 6.
What a start to 2018 with the Bombers improving to 3-1-1 and they have won 6 of their last 8 games and sit 15-19-2-3 which is 9th overall. The Bombers are just two points behind Kindersley but the Klippers have two games in hand.
Flin Flon conitinues to put more room between them and the clubs trying to chase down the last playoff spots. The Bombers are 7 up on Melville, 16 up on Yorkton and 19 ahead of Laronge.
The league will take a break til Friday as they prepare for the first ever SJHL/MJHL Showcase in Regina starting tomorrow.
Good luck to Head Coach and GM Mike Reagan, Crystopher Collin, Brenden Newton, Nate Hooper, Calvon Boots and Caleb Moretz who will all be taking part.
Next game for the Bombers is Friday January the 19th against Laronge, our next broadcast is Thursday January the 25th in Melville.
