Lancaster Solid In Bomber Debut

Some new faces seemed to be the spark the Bombers needed to end a two game losing streak against the Nipawin Hawks at the Whitney Forum on Saturday.

Colten Lancaster who was just picked up from Port Alberni of the BCHL, was solid in his SJHL debut stopping  40 out of 43 Nipawin shots including 19 in a busy second period as the Bombers picked up a much needed win in OT,  4-3.

Daylan Marchi opened the scoring for the Bombers when he scored just 1:52 into the opening period on Northland Ford Teddy Bear toss night. Teddy bears and lots of other stuffed animals littered the ice in one of the most successful promotions that Northland Ford has seen in the last 5 years after the first period goal.

After all the toys got cleaned up, Flin Flon kept the momentum going when Nate Hooper pocketed his 6th of the year on the powerplay to put the Bombers up early 2-0.

Nipawin answered before the first was done when Kenzie Arnold found the back of the net on a strange angle in front of the Bomber net.

Flin Flon carried a 2-1 lead into the second period but it didn't hold up for long as Brandon Arnold picked up his league leading 20th of the year, when the Bombers couldn't get the puck out of their zone.

All even in the third, the youg Bomber squad never stopped working and got rewarded with the lead one more time when Ethan Daniels beat a screened Jake Anthony to put the Maroon and White up 3-2.

Nipawin tied it once again when veteran Chad McCartney converted a nice feed from Lenchyshyn and Arnold. This was Lenchyshyn's third assist of the game.

The Bombers had a lot of good chances to win it in regulation but Jake Anthony who looked shaky early, was tough to beat the second and third periods and made a lot of good saves.

So Flin Flon would have to try and do something they haven't been able to do all season and that is win a game in extra time. The Bombers killed a Hawk powerplay early in overtime and seemed to match up well 3 on 3.

Nate Hooper made a perfect drop pass along the boards and Calvon Boots grabbed the loose puck and went in alone on Jake Allen and shot the puck right off the post in the top left corner for the win.

Defenseman Alex Lindstrom made his Bomber debut and he looked very good at both ends of the ice and lookes like he could be the quarterback they were looking for to run the powerplay.

A much needed win for the Bombers who snap a 2 game losing streak and beat the Hawks for the first time this season. Flin Flon will improve to 9-12-1-3 on the year and give themselves some more breathing room over Laronge for the final playoff spot by 8 points.

It won't take long for the rivalry to resume as these two teams will collide once more at the Cage in Nipawin tomorrow. We hit the air with the Great North GM  Coach's Show at 7:15 and play by play at 7:30. Another new face, Jordan Funk, who the Bombers got from Kindersley in a trade on December the 1st will make his debut tomorrow. Gary Childerhose will continue to manage the bench with Mike Reagan in Calgary for Canada West.
