Bombers Have Golden Opportunity

The Flin Flon Bombers make their way back to Crescent Point Place in Weyburn tonight with a 3-1 series lead and a chance to wrap up their first round SJHL Quarter Final series.

To say that things continue to get more interesting after each game would be a huge understatement.

After splitting the first 2 games in Weyburn , the Bombers took both games at home including a 3-2 win on Wednesday night.

Wednesday had a little bit of everything including a penalty shot goal by Switzer, another disallowed goal and one of the most interesting finishes I have ever seen.

I am sure if you weren't at the game you have probably saw the highlights on social media which has over 100,000 views as of today.

The Bombers had just won the game and were getting ready to go to centre ice for their traditional salute to the fans, when Bryce Thoma the Weyburn coach signaled to Neuberger, one of his players  to pick up a moose leg that had been thrown on the ice. Weyburn scooped it up and were starting to make their way off the ice to their dressing room.

The moose legs are sacred and a big part of the tradition in Flin Flon and the players took exception and skated down the ice after it. When the Bombers went to grab the moose leg back, a confrontation occurred and it looked like it might get ugly.

There were a few skirmishes and some anctious moments, but the officials did a nice job breaking things up and got order restored and managed to get both teams to their locker rooms.

Let's just say the SJHL head office was not impressed and has levied suspensions to both teams and a 1,500.00 fine to both clubs.

Suspended for  the Bombers are defenseman Joseph Leonidas, Brandon Masson and forward Brandon Lesko. Jason Lavallee has also received a 2 game suspension for throwing equipment up into the stands.

Weyburn suspensions include forwards Jacob Jeske, Drake Glover and Aiden Teilborg. Backup goalie Shaun Fleming is suspended for 3 games for a match penalty.

Both teams are now forced to make adjustments for tonight and both will have different challenges. The Wings who have only scored 8 goals in the 4 games will now have to find offense from other sources since they won't have their top line for the next couple games.

Flin Flon will be without 3 regular defenseman with the suspensions and injury to Morin at the end of game 3. I am thinking we will see Ben Lanfermann and Rylan Tkachuk for the first time in the series.

One thing is for sure there will be a lot of people in the building tonight. Word is even without the fan busses lots of Bomber fans from far and wide plan to be in Weyburn tonight. This has got the making of old time Flin Flon Bomber , Weyburn Red Wing hockey. These two teams have been around for a very long time and this is  another chapter to the storied rivalry.

These teams have battled each other many times over the last 50 years and their logos look exactly the same as the first time they came on the ice. Neither team will leave anything in the dressing room tonight.

Make sure you join us tonight on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Murray GM Coach's show at 8:15 Manitoba time. Who know's  what we will see next.
