Bombers Win Thriller

The Flin Flon Bombers have taken a 2-1 series lead over the Weyburn Red Wings, thanks to a big comeback win last night at the Whitney Forum.

I thought the game started slow and both teams were very careful not to make a mistake and took a scoreless tie into the locker room after period 1.

That would change in the second period when Bomber captain Tyson Empey charged down towards the Weyburn net and fired a beautiful snapshot past Jack Burgart  to put Flin Flon up 1-0.

Weyburn responded when Jansons re-directed a puck over Brenden Newton's shoulder a couple minutes later. The Wings would take the lead on the power play when Glover was left alone in front of the Bomber net and he made no mistake burying his first of the series to put the Wings up 2-1 after 2.

The Bomber powerplay finally came through as Brandon Switzer fired a one timer past Jack Burgart 14 seconds into the period to send the 1000 plus at the Forum into a frenzy. Flin Flon's powerplay was 0 for 11 in the two previous games and was due.

The fans were loud and kept the "Go Bombers Go " chant going for the rest of the game.

Flin Flon did not disappoint and were able to jump on a loose puck in front of the Weyburn net when Corey Thomas fired a rebound past Jack Burgart. Reitmeier had a really good chance but Burgart robbed him before Thomas cashed in at the 5:26 mark.

Brenden Newton did the rest and Flin Flon hung on for the 3-2 win and have taken a 2-1 series lead. Newton stopped 47 out of 49 Weyburn shots and improved his save % to .971 in his back to back starts.

It was a night that Newton and Thomas will not forget as they also picked up their awards for making the SJHL All Rookie Team from SJHL President Bill Chow before the game.

Bomber Head Coach Mike Reagan was all smiles last night on the 102.9 CFAR Post Game Show and talked about taking the lead in the series. "It shows how big a heart this team has and this team is different, they care and are willing to sacrifice. We had guys diving all over the place blocking shots. We are ecstatic and this is the first time I can remember us winning game 3 here after splitting down south. I am really proud of how the guys battled here tonight."

Don't forget game 4 is at the Whitney Forum tonight, and the Bombers will have a chance to take a strangle hold on the series and head back to Weyburn with a 3-1 lead for game 5 Saturday. If you would like to head down for the game the Bombers are trying to fill a fan bus and you need to get a hold of Leanna by Thursday morning at 10 by calling 204-687-4404.

We are back on the air waves tonight with the Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:15, play by play at 7:30. see you tonight,
