Series Deadlocked

After a tough 4-1 setback to open up the playoffs on Friday, The Flin Flon Bombers on a masterful performance from Brandon Newton have tied up their best of 7 Quarter Final Series with Weyburn at a game apiece.

Newton who came in to relieve Zac Robidoux midway through the second period on Friday, stopped all 30 shots fired in his direction and picked up his first SJHL playoff win and shutout as the Bombers rallied for a 1-0 win Saturday.

I thought Newton looked really good and comfortable on Friday and after giving up a goal on the first shot he saw on a 2 on 1, he has been lights out since stopping 54 out of 55 shots. The one I distinctly remember was a sprawling glove save on Drake Glover late in the first period on Saturday. This was huge as the Bombers were getting the majority of the chances before Glover got in alone on the young Bomber netminder. This was a timely save for sure.

His rebound control has been perfect and he now sits with a record of 11-1 since January the 1st and was all smiles after the biggest win of his Junior career.

Alex Smith was the only player to find the back of the net, when he converted a pass from Joel Kocur early in the third period. Kocur came out of the corner and found Smith over on the right side of the net and he made no mistake beating the scary good Jack Burgart stick side.

Smith also hit a cross bar and looked like he scored earlier in the night when he shovelled a puck under Burgart in the second period. The referee says he lost sight of the puck and disallowed the goal despite the goal judge turning the light on.

The Bombers didn't let that get to them and continued to play one of their most complete games of the season, and Coach  Reagan rolled 4 lines throughout the night  and most shifts were 45 seconds tops. This was a complete team effort which saw the Bombers outshoot Weyburn 35-30 and 12-4 in the third period.

Flin Flon have tied the series despite only scoring 2 goals in the first 2 games and are finding out why Jack Burgart is the best goalie in the league. Burgart has stopped 68 out of 70 shots he has faced and he rarely ever gives up a rebound. He has had some help from his friends too including a couple of cross bars. The Wings also do a very good job blocking shots.

The series will shift to Flin Flon for games 3 and 4 Tuesday, Wednesday 7:30 at the Whitney Forum. Remember you can pick up your playoff tickets at the Bomber office located at the FF Community Hall. Office opens at noon.
