Bombers- Wings Preview

For the second time in 3 years the Flin Flon Bombers will face a team from the Viterra Division in the opening round of the SJHL  playoffs. The Bombers will make their way to Crescent Point Place in Weyburn for game 1 of this best of 7 starting Friday.

Weyburn is the only team that Flin Flon did not beat this year, but you know what they say the playoffs are a whole new season.

Flin Flon finshed third in the Sherwood and 6th overall at : 34-20-0-4 good for 72 points, while Weyburn were first in the Viterra and third overall with a record of: 35-14-5-4 good for 79 points.

I think this series could come down to secondary scoring as teams usually key in on their opponents top players and you just don't get as much room as you would in the regular season.

We all know that Flin Flon is led by the trio of Smith, Switzer and Kocur who combined for 98 out of their team's 230 goals which works out to 45 % of the team's overall scoring. Although we did see emergences from team Captain Tyson Empey,  Jason Lavallee and Joseph Leonidas who were all good down the stretch.

The Wings did not have a single player in the top 20 overall scorers, as they pride themselves on defense as they were a league best 139 goals against in 58 games. They finished 8th overall in offense with 182 goals for.

For Flin Flon it is simple you have to get to the SJHL Goaltender Of The Year Jack Burgart who not only is the league's best puck stopper but he is the lifeblood of his team. If the Bombers can get to him early in the series they may be able to get Weyburn off their game.

Burgart started 43 out of his team's 58 games and put up a record of: 27-10-4-2 with a goals against of: 1.97 and save % of .935 to lead the league in both categories.

I am assuming the Bombers will go with veteran Zac Robidoux to start the series as he started 43 games and finshed up with a record of: 20-14-0-3 and led the league in shutouts with 5. Robidoux is also a former National Champion with Portage and played most of the games down the stretch with Brenden Newton recovering from an injury.

Both teams should be fresh with Flin Flon enjoying 10 days off and Weyburn not playing a game in 2 weeks. No matter what go's down you will hear every Flin Flon Bomber playoff game on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.
