Bombers Come Home Empty Handed

It was a tough weekend for the Flin Flon Bombers to say the very least. Not only did they drop both games to the Battleford Stars but they were out scored 14-3.

Things went bad early Friday when Reed Delainey scored 34 seconds into the game, and the Stars never looked back picking up the convincing 9-1 victory.

Igor Leonenko and Jake McMillen both registerded hat tricks and combined for 7 points and were responsible for quite the offensive show.

It didn't help that the Bombers took lot's of penaltys and were short handed 14 times including three 5 on 3's.

Mike Reagan summed it up after the game," you are not going to beat anybody if you head to the penalty box that many times."

Greyson Reitmeier had the lone goal for the Bombers,  as he was the only player to beat Tyler Fuhr early in the third period.

Zac Robidoux went the distance for the Bombers and didn't get a lot of support stopping 32 out of 41 shots.

I think everyone expected the Bombers to be a lot better team on Saturday including the Stars themselves who had struggled against Flin Flon the first 4 meetings of the year.

Flin Flon got off to a good start when Kristian St.Onge batted a puck out of the air to open the scoring at 15:21 of the first period.

The referee waved off the goal initially, but after talking with his linesman they decided it was a good goal.

Battleford responded quickly and tied the game a minute later when Davidson went in alone and beat Robidoux five hole.

This came after a controversial hit on Tyson Empey.  Jordan Wiest caught Empey with his head down around center ice and took a liberty on a player that should have resulted in a penaly and misconduct. I am assuming the Bombers will send the video in to the league office. Empey did not return to the ice after the questionable hit.

Mike Reagan explained after the game that the official admitted to missing it. No word on Empey's status at this time.

The Bombers were feeling better about their chances in the second game and were tied at 1 starting the second period.

Igor Leonenko took over right where he left off the night before scoring 2 nice goals in the second, his 42nd and 43rd of the year. His second stood up as the game winner. He now trails Travis Mayan of the Mustangs by 2 for the overall league lead.

Battleford took a 3-1 lead into the third and got a big insurance goal from Gorgi mid way through the period, before Lavalle would score on the power play for the Bombers to give them hope with just under 2 minutes remaining.

With the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Flin Flon could not get any closer and Davidson would seel the deal with his second of the night as he would put the puck into the empty net and send the Stars to their 40th win of the year with a 5-2 win.

This was especially sweet against the Bombers who had owned the Stars the first four meetings of the year.

I thought Zac Robidoux bounced back with a nice effort and stopped 35 out of 40 Stars shots and did a nice job handling his rebounds.

The North Stars are in control of their own destiny for first overall as they lead Melfort by 3 points and Weyburn by 5 with 3 games to go .

Battleford will finish up with Humboldt and a home and home with Kindersley.

As for the Bombers they did get a favour from Laronge who beat Nipawin in a shoot out Saturday, so the Hawks lead the Bombers by 4 points for fourth overall with 3 games remaining. Flin Flon also have Estevan breathing down their necks  for fifth and  are only 3 points behind the Bombers with a game in hand.

Flin Flon desperately need all 4 points against Laronge this weekend if they have any hope of catching the Hawks for fourth. The Bombers host the Ice Wolves Friday before travelling to Laronge Saturday and will close out the season against Nipawin at home on Tuesday.

The Hawks will play Melfort in a home and home this weekend.

Make sure you are listening to our last regular season broadcast from Laronge Saturday with Jamie Smalley looking after the call. It begins with the Murray GM Coach's Show at 6:45 and play by play at 7.
