Kodiaks Take Championship

The Creighton Kodiaks capped off an undefeated season by beating the Pinehouse Lakers 67-41 to win the Ralph Pilz Trophy Saturday afternoon in Prince Albert.

The Kodiaks ran the table to 7-0 throughout the regular season and playoffs to win the Northern Saskatchewan Football League their first year in operation by beating the defending champs.

It was another impressive afternoon for Evan Linnick who scored four touchdowns and booted a field goal, to lead his team to an impressive victory for the Championship.

Other highlights included quarterback Blair Pietsch airing out a 55 yard touchdown strike to receiver Chris Reynolds, who scored one of his two touchdowns on the day.

Randy Nowlin scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery, and Brennen Van Meer scored on a 20 yard run up the middle.

Creighton built up a 34-13 lead at the half and never looked back. Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk said establishing the running game right off the hop was a big  key. He also mentioned getting a turnover to start the second half , helped them keep the momentum they built up after the first half.

Pinehouse Defensive Coach Wade Wakeline said they didn't have an answer for Creighton's speed, something they hadn't seen all season.

Assistant Coach Jason Straille said their entire team apprciated the great crowd support they had throughout the season,  including the 200 plus who made their way to Max Clunie Field on Saturday.

The big crowds at all the games were great motivation for this young group who will have a good turnover of kids returning next year to defend their title.
