Stars 4 Bombers 3 OT

The Battleford Stars were able to shake off a 3-1 set back against the Nipawin Hawks Friday night, by bouncing back with a 4-3 OT win over the Flin Flon Bombers Saturday. I thought the Bombers looked a little rusty not playing in 6 days.

The Stars scored two goals in the first period when Mathew Saharchuk  grabbed a rebound off the glass that bounced right in front of the Bomber net, allowing him  to fire the puck past Simon Hofley.

Saharchuk scored again on the power play, when O'Sullivan won a face off cleanly and made a nice pass in front of the Bomber goal, where Saharchuk was standing alone to put the Stars up 2-0 after 1.

Flin Flon fired 18 shots at Stars goaltender Spencer Tremblay in the first period, but they could not solve the 20 year old. Battleford did do a good job keeping most of the shots to the outside.

The Bombers would cash in with a couple of goals in the second period, when local product Evan Akkerman fought off a Battleford defender and went in alone to fire a wrist shot low blocker side on Tremblay, to bring the home crowd to their feet. This was Akkerman's second of the season.

Dean Allison, the Bomber captain would tie the game, when he banged in a loose puck on the power play for his fourth of the season. Flin Flon outshot the Stars 12-6 in the second.

The Bombers carried the momentum into the third period, and took their first lead of the game when Danis Chartrand scored his first of the season at 15:38.

The lead how ever was short lived because Jake McMillen was able to convert a Bomber turn over at 17:06 to tie the game at 3.

Both clubs went at each other pretty good for the final three minutes of regulation, but they could not decide it in regulation.

So they would have to decide it in over time. Nothing new for the Stars who were going to over time for the 6th time already this season. This was Flin Flon's third OT game.

Nick Fountain was the over time hero, when he blasted a shot from the point at 3:18 into the extra period. There was all kinds of traffic in front of Simon Hofley and he never saw the shot. Fountain picked a good time to get his first goal of the season. Final shots were 40-21 in the Bombers favour.

The Bomber record now stands at: 4-1-2-1 (11 points) second in the Sherwood Division, 3 points behind the Division leading Melfort Mustangs.

Battleford is : 5-2-2, second in the Kramer and 2 points behind the undefeated Notre Dame Hounds.

Flin Flon will get their biggest test so far this young season when they head out for 4 games in 5 nights starting Tuesday in Humboldt.

Mike Reagan the Head Coach and GM says if they are going to have success, they need to stop spotting teams 2 goal leads all the time. " We have been handing teams 2-0 leads quite a bit. That is going to change, there is no question our warm up is going to change and we need guys to be ready right from the get-go."

Reagan also commented that he is looking forward to the challenge of going on the road.. "This is our first real test of going out on the road and having a road trip, and hopefully our boys will be ready to go and get off to a better start than tonight. I thought we played a good game after the first period and again you just can't spot a team a 2-0 lead ."

Make sure you listen to Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday's games on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com. We will be getting the feed from Boldt FM in Humboldt for Tuesday and will be on the air at about 7:50 PM.

Recently Acquired Lance Yaremchuk will make his Bomber debut on Tuesday and Eric Pedersen is also expected back in the lineup.
